Frequently Asked Questions

How is the winner determined?

The skier/team that completes the most laps over the three-hour event will hold the title of “LangaLoppet Champion” for their category. If two skiers/teams complete the same number of laps, the skiers/team that finishes first will be considered the champion.

How serious is the racing?

Loppets are by definition characterized by their festive atmosphere rather than the competition. The “racing” is as serious or as casual as you want it to be. The event is intended as a social event and opportunity to connect with other skiers as much as it is a race. We encourage everyone to come out regardless of skill level. To help with this, skiers can stop to take a break, eat, warm-up or chat with a friend at any time and then get back to racing again at any time they choose (it can be a social ski).

If you want to come out, do one lap and chinwag with other skiers for the rest of the time we’re excited to have you! If you want to ski for three hours straight to be crowned the “LangaLoppet Solo Champion” we’re equally excited to have you!

What if it’s cold?

The event will be held regardless of weather conditions unless there is an extreme cold warning.

There will be two areas where skiers will be able to stop to warm-up if needed, the clubhouse near the parking lot which is heated and the warm-up shack at the approximate midpoint of the course which will have a wood stove that we will ensure is well stocked with wood.

Skiers on a team of two or three are welcome to wait inside the clubhouse while their teammate(s) complete their laps.

Hot food will be available inside the clubhouse.

Do I need a specific style of skis?

This is a “freestyle” event so you’re welcome to use either skate or classic technique for the event or even to ski it “skiathalon” style and switch skis and techniques halfway through.

There are some Steep Hills at River Ridge, should I be Worried?

One of the great things about the River Ridge trails is that there are some big hills to test your climbing and descending skills. We recognize that these aren’t for everyone so we’ll have a “Coyote Loop” that's more advanced and a “Porcupine Loop” that's designed for more recreational skiers. The Porcupine Loop will skip the largest hills so you’re not too tired to enjoy some hot chocolate after a lap.
