Sugar Cookie Showdown 2026 January 17th at 10AM

Lander’s smallest Nordic race!


Join us for the 3nd annual Sugar Cookie Showdown where we cheer on the tiniest members of our community while they practice their Nordic ski skills! Categories include Preschool through 5th grade.


Little Loop (approximately .5km) - Recommended for preschool + kindergartners

Medium Loop (approximately 1.5 km)- Recommended for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Graders

Big Loop (approximately 3 km)- Recommended for 4th and 5th Graders


A registration fee of $10 helps us cover insurance and race snacks.


Race start is at 10 am in the Beaver Creek Stadium. We will have your bibs ready for pick up when you arrive at the venue. Each participant will receive a sugar cookie when they cross the finish line. This event is all about fun, so feel free to wear costumes and be sure to bring a smile!


Your skier can choose whichever distance they feel comfortable with regardless of the suggested age/distance categories. Please help us spread the word and sign up for a fun event all about getting kids skiing!


Location & Directions: Beaver Creek Nordic Ski Area - Located south on Wyoming Highway 28 at milepost 51.5, where the highway crosses Beaver Creek. Beaver Creek is a remote location with no shelter available to the public so be sure to dress/bring appropriate clothing! Please consider carpooling as there is limited parking available at the venue.


Beaver Creek Trail Access:

Please DO NOT CROSS THE HIGHWAY, but use the trail that leads under the bridge. Once you reach the groomed trails, you can leave ski bags just off the trail and continue to the start area on skis. Follow the signs for about 1 km to reach the stadium area. Walking is allowed on the ski trail from the trailhead to the stadium.

There is no penalty for scratches. No additions will be accepted on race day, so please include ALL of your skiers when you email your race orders..


Description of Race: All races will be 4km classic, 15 second interval start. The Novice race will be a 1km, 15sec interval start. There will be an open category in both distances. The regular 4km Middle School Race route will be Lower Limestone, Lower Tree Loop, Pipeline, Upper Tree Loop, Upper Limestone into the Stadium. The novice race route will be Lower Limestone to Cow Crossing to Upper Limestone.

An experienced parking crew will direct buses for parking. Beaver Creek is a remote location with no shelter available to the public so be sure to dress/bring appropriate clothing! Please consider carpooling as there is limited parking available at the venue.

12:00 PM: Course Open for Inspection - ALL skiers and spectators MUST ski the direction of the race at all times. Please DO NOT WALK on the course.

12:50 PM: Course Closed. Athletes may continue to warm up behind the start area.

1:00 PM: 8th Grade Boys Start

~1:15 PM: 7th Grade Boys Start

~1:30 PM 6th Grade Boys Start

~1:45 PM 8th Grade Girls Start

~2:00 PM 7th Grade Girls Start

~2:15 PM 6th Grade Girls Start

~2:30 PM Open category 4km

~2:45 PM Novice - all combined

~3 PM Awards Ceremony in the Stadium


Race Warnings:

Racers must ski the course in the direction of the race. Anyone skiing the course backwards will be considered for disqualification and warned. Skiers late for their start will be allowed to start late if they choose.


Timing:

The Lander Timing Crew will use the Summit Timing System created by Ernie Page during the races. Digital wireless timers and transceivers are used, along with 2 bib recorders, 1 bib caller, 1 bib entry person, 1 bib entry person on transceiver at the start, 1 starter, and 2 people lining up the skiers. There are 7 people at the finish and 3 at the start. Two battery back-up systems are also used. There are multiple generators that will provide power.


Awards:

Top10 racers will receive ribbons for each gender for each grade (6th, 7th and 8th). Top 5 racers in the novice category for each gender will receive ribbons. Awards will be presented in the stadium as soon as possible after the completion of the races.


Results:

Unofficial results will be posted as soon as possible. Thirty minutes after unofficial results are posted, official results will be posted. Please do not disturb the timers or volunteers for any results.


Protests:

Protests must be made in writing within 15 minutes of the posting of the unofficial results. Protests will be filed in writing with the race secretary, who will notify the jury. The appointed jury will deal with all protests.


Parking:

There will be an experienced parking crew to direct you to park in an organized way. Please be respectful to them.


Bathrooms:

Porta-potties will be available for racer and spectator use in the parking lot and near the stadium.


Refreshments & Hospitality:

Race organizers will have water and hot drinks available for racers, but racers are advised to BRING YOUR OWN SNACKS!


Racers, spectators and volunteers are advised to wear/ bring appropriate clothing. Beaver Creek is a remote location with no shelter available to the public.


If we have enough volunteers, the Lander Middle School will offer a bake sale (baked goods, hot drinks, cup-o-soups) in the stadium, so bring some money (cash only, please bring small bills and change) to help raise money for Middle School uniforms and equipment.


Medical:

A Basic Life Support EMT Medical team will be on site. They are able to assess, stabilize and transport a patient to the highway. The Fremont County ambulance has been notified of the race by medical staff.


Weather:

The weather at Beaver Creek may be different from Lander. The closest weather sensors and webcam can be found here . The following website may provide helpful information: www.landernordic.org If there is a delay due to road conditions or cold weather, coaches will be contacted by cell phones to update them on the plans for the races.


There are no dogs allowed on the trails at Beaver Creek. Sorry, PLEASE leave fido at home!
