This regional Nordic development day is open to Nordic ski athletes in the 11 to 15 age range as well as their parents and club coaches. The design is deliberately set up to connect some of the top young high performance athletes in Alberta with younger athletes in the region; and to help create discussion & collaborative ideas between regional coaches. The day will be divided into the following two programs:

Youth Athlete Development Camp (athletes)

  • Participants : Young athletes (10) 11-14 (15) years of age
  • Recommended Skill Level : it is assumed that some participants will have limited, if any, roller ski experience. Participants will be grouped as required to ensure the best learning and training environment
  • Leadership :
  • Activity Focus : {update October 11} Likely now snow skiing for camp as forecast of 10cm for Friday.
  • Training Focus : Coordination & Technique; Speed & Agility; Functional Strength & Core Stability
  • What to Bring :
    • Skate Roller Skis, Boots, Poles, & Helmet (registration system allows you to indicate you don’t have access to roller skis and best efforts will be made to find roller skis to try out if you don’t have any). Helmets are mandatory for all roller skiers!
    • Reflective or very visible training top
    • Ski Striding Poles (handle height about 10cm shorter than armpit)
    • Running Shoes suitable for trail running (and a spare set in case one set gets wet and muddy)
    • Lunch, Snacks and Water: pack all your own healthy food, some snacks you can have with you as trail-side energizer, and a water belt (or easy way to carry water with you most of the time). Bring extra water bottles (1 to 2) full of water.

Race Support Info & Collaborative Opportunities Session (coaches, parents)

  • Participants : club coaches, parent volunteers, and others interested in race support and waxing systems.
  • Recommended Skill Level : everyone is welcome. The session will be structured so that club coaches and parent volunteers with lots of race support experience can share their ideas and practices; as well as for those that have little or no experience to come and learn the range of current practices being used at clubs, regional team and National Training Centre levels.
  • Facilitation : The session’s lead facilitators will be Chris Jeffires (Alberta World Cup Academy High Performance Program Director) and Keegan Brookes (Academy Wax Tech) with support from Glen Cowper (CRTG Team Manager and Coach) and Dave Poetker (CRTG Wax Tech).
  • Session Outline:

Morning (10:00am to 12:00):

  • Introductions & Round-Table Overview of each attending clubs’ current bench, tool, test ski and wax inventory.
  • Overview of AWCA-CRTG collaborative approach to race support at NorAms & Nationals
  • Presentation of the AWCA-CRTG race support systems and protocols  (in CRTG portable wax room)
  • Questions and Discussion

Afternoon (1:30 to 3:30pm): Collaborative Race Support Opportunities for 2016-2017 Alberta Cup Season

  • Brainstorming Discussion Topic #1: What are the current barriers/challenges to creating an effective collaborative multi-club regional race support systems?
  • Brainstorming Discussion Topic #2: Which barriers/challenges are easiest to remove? And which are the hardest to remove? And why?
  • Brainstorming Discussion Topic #3: What would the ideal multi-club regional race support system look like?
  • Brainstorming Discussion Topic #4: What could we try this upcoming season to get closer to the ideal collaborative system?

Something to consider:

  • Wax Benches, Tools & Supplies: If you want to get your inventory organized a week or two early this year it may be valuable to compare with the real goods together at a time when we are all not under the pressure of a race weekend. This could really help to understand our collective assets and where we may find future efficiencies. If you feel you may be able to do this, it would work best to come early on Sunday morning to set up beside the AWCA-CRTG system early on Sunday morning (i.e. AWCA-CRTG set up will begin at 8:00am).
  • Folding camping chair (just for comfort)

Note for Regional 16+ age Nordic ski athletes and their coaches: on Saturday, October 15 training the Academy and CRTG team athletes will be training together most of the day. The general goal, weather permitted, is to do a Roller ski session in the morning (distance roller ski with possibly a Skate ski roller ski time trial after) and then a trail run in the afternoon. All regional 16+ regional Nordic ski athletes and their coaches are welcome to join, share, and learn together. Send Ian Murray and email (at: ian@xcskier.com ) if you are interested
