Women’s 55+ XC ski class offered by Foothills Nordic Ski Club strives to follow the goals of Physical Literacy in the delivery of the program. “Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life.” Vancouver Conference on Physical Literacy – June 2015.
The program will be offered on Thursday mornings, 9:30am -12:00 noon from January to March 2018 at a variety of locations around Calgary and area (depending on snow conditions). Registration will begin in mid-September and we will have a meet and greet session and a waxing and equipment session in November. If we are lucky to get early snow in Calgary, we may meet for a few extra sessions in December.
Four instructors will be leading the group: Gail Niinimaa is a biathlon and xc coach and former competitor, Sharon Hogg is a xc coach and former masters skier, Teresa Lynch is a xc CANSI instructor and former competitor, and Tina DeFreitas is a former xc competitor, coach and jackrabbit organizer. Each have a different approach to xc skiing and are passionate about bringing their love of the sport to you!
The classes are structured to include some instruction, some free skiing time and social time, which includes a coffee stop after the class. The group will be divided each week by skill and may be different each week depending on the technique being taught. However, participants will have the opportunity to work with each of the four instructors. We will start with classic technique but will also explore ski skating as the winter progresses and the conditions become more difficult to wax for! Our goal is to teach our participants to ski efficiently and safely and to meet others in the same demographic that also enjoy XC Skiing. This is not a training group for serious racing goals, or for advanced skiers, but a recreational group for women 55+! It is also NOT for rank beginner skiers. All participants must be comfortable on XC skis and have done some skiing previously.
There may be planned outings to Bragg Creek, Canmore Nordic Centre (CNC) and K-Country but we will mainly be skiing at Confederation Park Golf Course.
Registration
$150 – includes club membership, Cross Country Alberta Insurance coverage, and honorariums and ski passes for the instructors. Ski equipment and Ski passes (required at CNC) will be the responsibility of each participant.
