2018 CRTG XC Development Camp

OCTOBER 13-15, 2018
Edmonton Area

Hosted by

AND

October 13-14, 2018 the Alpine Insurance Alberta World Cup Academy and the Capital Region Training Group (CRTG) are jointly hosting a dryland training camp for young cross country skiers from across Central and Northern Alberta. High performance athletes from both these teams will be leading many of the sessions for the younger skiers attending the camp; and older regional athletes are also invited to join the Academy & CRTG athletes for some training sessions and time trials. And while athletes are learning from athletes, the lead coaches from the Academy And CRTG will be sharing their latest thoughts and practices on training, racing, and technique with club coaches attending the camp.

IMPORTANT NOTE: This page contains a lot of important information. For parents/coaches bringing development skiers to the camp, the first day begins on Saturday, October 13 at 10:00AM at the Fort Saskatchewan Nordic Centre (google map link in schedule below). Older athletes have 3 days and younger athletes have the opportunity for 2 days. It is highly recommended that you PRINT or save this page electronically so you can get back to this information easily.

Who Should Participate?

This camp has two targeted age brackets.

The first group targeted are young Nordic skiers in the 11 to 16 age range from those who have very little ski experience up to and including those that have been ski racing for one or two seasons or more. The second group are regional skiers age 16 to 24 who have several years of Nordic ski training and racing experience . While the emphasis for most of the programming time will be on the younger age athletes, there are specific training opportunities for these older regional athletes to connect with the athletes currently training and racing on the Academy and CRTG teams; and to be a part of the coaching that these athletes receive on a regular basis.

Additionally, any regional skiers older than 16 that have lots of experience are invited to come out to help with the coaching of the younger athletes.

Who Will Be Coaching the development skiers at the camp?

Athletes leading athletes is a core philosophy of the approach to this camp. Therefore, the coaching of camp participants will be done by the Junior and Senior athletes from the National Training Centre in Canmore (i.e. the Alpine Insurance Alberta World Cup Academy) and from the Edmonton-based Capital Region Training Group (CRTG). These high performance athletes have NCCP coach training as well as strong technical knowledge and experiences to share from several years at the NorAm and National levels in the sport.

Canadian Olympian and current Canadian National Ski Team Member Emily Nishikawa will be present to share her wisdom on ski training and her experiences as an elite cross country ski racer.

What will the youth skiers do at the camp?

For those that have roller ski experience and have access to roller ski equipment, this camp will have sessions focused on roller ski technique and training. For those without roller ski experience there will be trail running, hill bounding and specific agility sessions. All camp participants will participate in agility & coordination games as well as strength and conditioning circuits. Groups will be divided by a mix of level of experience and age with the main objective being to ensure everyone is comfortable and as challenged as they wish.

Activity and Fun Warning: The emphasis of the camp will be on keeping everyone very active throughout so ensure you bring your own water and healthy snacks (ideally so you can carry it easily while you train).

What's in it for Regional Club Coaches?

While the Academy and CRTG team athletes are coaching all the regional youth for most sessions at the camp, the team coaches from the Academy and CRTG will be facilitating technical discussions and practical technical sessions on a variety of topics throughout the two camp days.

Chris Jeffries , a past National Ski Team athlete and current High Performance Director at the National Training Centre in Canmore will be joined by Ivan Babikov, Former National Ski Team Head Coach and National Team Athlete and current Alberta Ski Team Coach as well as CRTG lead coach Ian Murray to share with regional club coaches their most current thoughts and practices on training philosophy, training zones distributions, strength and mobility, technique development and other topics of interest. Chris, Ivan and Ian have all been to numerous national and international competitions, camps and coaching workshops in recent years and they look forward to sharing what they have learned through all these experiences. The approach to these sessions will also be to encourage all regional club coaches to share and discuss their current practices in their clubs.

Parents , even if you are not currently coaching at your club, are encouraged to take part in the coaching sessions as well as this will create an opportunity to get each other up to date on current regional club plans for the upcoming season; and to compare ideas on technique, training and maybe on how to increase program and event participation for these age groups.
