2020-21 TNTs

2020-21 TNTs

Welcome to the FWOC 2020-21 TNT Program

TNTs (which used to stand for Tuesday Night Training or Toonie Night Training) are orienteering training events on a neighbourhood map which may or may not be an orienteering map. It could also be a city map; Teresa once used a map of where fire hydrants were in her neighbourhood obtained from the City of Calgary website and created a course on that! Organizers create the map and place flags in the terrain. Participants come to the location of the organizer's choosing (which in the past has been their house but could also be a park or coffee shop), get the map and run the course. TNTs use self-timing. They used to run in the evenings and the organizer would also make soup for participants, to help them warm up after their cold, dark run.

Given the COVID 19 situation, an evening TNT at someone's house with soup afterwards is not an option (change #1). This year, TNTs can still be in the neighbourhood of someone's house but participants would get the map from the step or backyard, staying outside .

Change #2: Since we can no longer gather, we'd like to give the option to run in the daytime. We have chosen Friday as some people have half-days Friday. The TNT will be set up by 2pm Friday and left out until Saturday morning so that people can run it as late they choose. Bring a headlamp if you choose to run in the evening. If you'd like to run Saturday morning, you can negotiate with the organizer to pick up the flags for them!

Change #3: As with our fall series, participants would have to sign up in advance. We are proposing participants agree to a series of TNTs, and there would be a minimal charge paid in advance so the organizer does not have to handle money. We are charging $20 for all 13 sessions.

Change #4: Participants have to complete the COVID 19 health waiver the day of the event and agree to not come should they develop symptoms.

This program consists of 13 weeks of orienteering in the form of trainings

  1. November 20 - February 26. No course on Christmas or New Year's Day.
  2. Self-timed.
  3. Only flags in the terrain (either pin flags or tape/cup "flags"); no SI units
  4. One course - intermediate level - you can choose to cut off at any point if you feel it is too long for you.
  5. Organizers will provide maps for a Friday afternoon or evening run; you can choose to run it on the weekend but the flags may be picked up.
