Welcome to the Volunteer registration for Alberta Cup 7&8 2025!
This is your front row seat for the races - bringing together athletes from across the province and beyond!
Below you will find descriptions of the volunteer positions available.
- It is helpful if you are doing the same job(s) each day for consistency, but if you wish to volunteer in two areas, please ensure the shifts do not overlap days and times for each area - it only takes a moment. We will provide training and support on the job!
- If you are working outside, please be sure to dress for the weather. Food and drink are provided throughout the day in our volunteer centre - but if you have dietary concerns, please be sure to bring what you need.
- Times and tasks may change at any time due to the variable nature of racing but we will do our best to keep to the times and give fair warning if they are changing.
Thanks for giving generously to the community with your time!
Course Controllers
Controllers work on the course to track skiers progress; and observe, record and report infractions. We will meet in the clubhouse prior to each race.
Each control point requires a bib caller, bib recorder and video operator (using personal cell phones). Training will be provided for all jobs. These are outside jobs that require warm boots, warm clothes and a thermos. Snacks and beverages will be provided to take on course.
Course Setup and Take Down
Course crew volunteers pre-ski the course, setting up flagging and placing signs and markers. Just before the race on snowy days, Forerunners, if required, will ski in the course to make it fast for the initial skiers. During the race, Marshalls will control access to the course at crossing points if required. At the end of the day, course crew volunteers ski the course, looking for stragglers, and collecting or realigning signs and flagging. Must be fit enough to ski the course quickly while carrying equipment in a backpack. Volunteers are also required for manual grooming in key areas during races.
Finish Line Support
Set up, hand out and restock finish line refreshments and supplies for racers. Control access into the finish zone and visually confirm chips and bibs have been returned before racers leave the area.
Race Office and Bib Sorting
This is the communications and administration center for the Race. Some of the tasks to be done: prepare and hand out supplies to officials, give bibs to racers, answer general inquiries at race office, provide clerical support (making copies, filing records) to race officials and collect and organize bibs from the finish line. The job is indoors and there will be quiet times for breaks. (Inside job.)
Stadium Setup and Take Down
Help set up the stadium: all banners, markings; dividers; start and finish areas; and fencing etc. in the early morning of each race day. Take it down in preparation for grooming at the end of each race day. On Sunday afternoon, help take it all down and load it up. We will also need people controlling pedestrian access points to the inner stadium and being available to make changes during the day if required. This is perfect for people who want to race, watch and/or volunteer during the race events.
Timing Start and Finish
Working the Start and Finish volunteers give the racers a positive experience, fair starts and prompt and accurate timing results. All but the computer operator positions are outside jobs and require warm boots, warm clothes, and a thermos. There are three categories of volunteers needed:
1) Start/Finish Timing positions include: Starter, Assistant Starter, Bib Callers, Bib Recorders, and Manual Timers. Training and trial run-through will happen each morning before the races start.
2) Chips and Bib positions include: Wranglers, Chip Distribution and Collection, Clothing Steward and Bib Collectors.
3) Zone4 Computer Operator - Results/Timing Support Assistant (inside jobs) - not complicated, full training provided.
If at all possible, in order to minimize the total number of trained people required, it would be very helpful if you would consider volunteering for more than one day. |
Equipment Transportation
This is another perfect volunteer opportunity for those who wish to race. We need someone with a truck to pick up a 16' utility trailer from near Fort Saskatchewan and deliver it to River Bend prior to February 2nd; then return them after Feb 4th. There may also be other smaller sundry items to be transported (these may include tents, PA equipment etc.). A 4x4 truck with hitch and cargo bed would be be best. Mileage will be reimbursed.
Venue
Venue services will manage all signage off and on the venue to control traffic and parking; manage the team wax tent area; set up the awards podium; manage pedestrian traffic on site if required; and check washroom facilities periodically for supplies (no cleaning required).
Announcer & Photographer
The announcer(s) will provide commentary as the race progresses through the start, lap (if applicable) and finish. Support from Zone 4 will provide bib numbers for identification of the racers. They will also help with the announcing of the awards.
The photographer will be taking action pictures of the racers, coaches, spectators and volunteers as a record of this fun and amazing event!
Volunteer Support
The hospitality room volunteers will lay out, supervise and restock the food and drink for volunteers, officials and honoured guests during venue set up and race hours; and will check in volunteers as they arrive and give them info for their shifts. Fri and Sat afternoons, you can help set up for the Captains' Meetings. (Inside job.)
