Learn to Frostbite

Learn to Frostbite 55 - 2026

The “Train to Frostbite 55” is an offering for people who wish to increase their endurance, get to know the ungroomed trails in the Yellowknife bush, learn about layering for skiing, break their personal best longest ski week after week, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, truly enjoy being outdoors this winter. In 2021 and 2022 the program was organized by Bernadette Knox and Sara Wong. This winter the program will be run by Sara Wong and Shelagh Montgomery.

The program will begin December 7 and run until just before the Frostbite 55 in mid-March, with a break for Christmas. Each Sunday a guided long ski, starting at 10 km and working up to 40 km will take place, with shorter weekday skis occasionally organized throughout the winter. The long group skis will take us into the bush around Yellowknife and introduce you to your new favourite wilderness trails. The length of the skis will vary depending on the weather, time of year and snow conditions.

It is recommended that you already have some skiing experience as many of the trails around Yellowknife are over 10 km. If you are able to ski for multiple hours at a 4-5 km pace but don’t feel confident heading out onto the bush trails alone this program is for you.

The cost will be $225 for the program , including some waxing tutorials at the YK Ski Club chalet. Participants can expect to achieve the skills and endurance to participate in events such as the Frostbite 55 in March 2026. You must be a ski club member to sign up .
